The Sun Coast–Rakiraki & Nananu-i-Ra

About the Sun Coast

The Kings Rd, the route along the northerly coast of Viti Levu, is less often seen by visitors. This is primarily because the road was just completed several years ago and hence, the Sun Coast area has seen less tourism development. The northerly route to Suva (via the airport) is longer so visitors are less likely to travel this road.

However, the scenery is beautiful, and there are numerous attractions, so the more adventurous visitor may want to rent a car and drive it.  The three main settlements along the way, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki are primarily agricultural communities but do have small hotels. The main tourist attraction is Nananu-i-ra, an island off of Rakiraki.

There are a few things to know about the road whether you decide to drive yourself or take a bus or hired taxi. The first is that it is much more hazardous than the southern route. The section of Queens Rd from Nadi to Lautoka and the section of Kings Rd from Nausori to Suva are the busiest in the country. These two stretches are paved and well monitored by police, but the accident toll along these roads is high, so extra caution is needed.

Definitely Do Not Miss

Stay overnight at the colonial era Rakiraki Hotel and jump on a boat to Nananu-i-Ra, a resort island with good snorkeling and amenable to the most modest of budgets.
