happened to read this story the other day in the New York Times. (See below). It's rather unusual that the Times runs a piece on Fiji. Essentially it's is a variation on the what's-old-is-new-again theme. According to the story, which ran in the business section, old time camakau (canoes) with modern innovations are making a comeback.
Why? They are so much more economical to operate than fiberglass boats with outboard engines.

Joji Marau Misaele, who teaches mechanical engineering at Fiji National University and who is Mr. Vakaloloma's cousin, developed the prototype for the new canoe.
“It’s all right here, eh,” he said with a laugh, pointing at his head and continuing to sand the boat’s mahogany hull.
