If you're visiting Fiji, plan on spending about $US85 (Fiji$150 per person) in departure taxes.  This is a 50% increase in the previous rate.

According to a report from Radio Australia, the move has prompted Flight Centre New Zealand to offer customers who had booked a holiday in Fiji to switch their deposits to another travel destination.

The new tax was first announced two days ago and took the travel industry by surprise.  The new tariff is effective immediately.

Fiji's permanent secretary of Tourism, Elizabeth Powell told Pacific Beat the taxes were needed to pay for the maintenance of infrastructure like roads and bridges.

"There has to be money to pay for this from somewhere," Ms Powell said. "We have got to make sure the facilities are there to cater for their [tourists] transportation, and stay while they're here. In order to do that, we need to raise funds."

She described Flight Centre's response as "an emotive reaction".

"Initially people are a little concerned when there is a price increase. It could be a concern if you haven't budgeted for it, [but] I don't think it's such a huge amount to really make a huge impact."
