It has been reported that American Samoa's nonvoting US congressman Eni Faleomavaega told Secretary of State Clinton that the "heavy-handed tactics and misguided sanctions" used against Fiji by the Australian and New Zealand governments are hurting average Fijians far more than the Bainimarama government. Faleomavaega went on to say the "foreign policy elites" of Australia and New Zealand wrongly viewed the South Pacific region with a eurocentric mentality.

I agree. Bainimarama is only trying to correct the divisive political system created by British colonialism. Divide and rule made it easy for the British to run a colony half Fijian / half East Indian and the Fijian chiefs were too happy to play along for the many perks they received. Bainimarama is Fiji's best hope of fixing this twisted system and politicians in Australia and New Zealand have just delayed Fiji's return to democracy by trying to force him into a corner. Faleomavaega knows that because he's an islander himself. The neocolonialists in Canberra and Wellington would do well to take a few pointers from Eni.
