There's always that one thing you forget to bring on your travels that you kick yourself for forgetting. During my recent sojourn to Fiji, for me that was an underwater camera.

Why? Because almost every day of my trip I went snorkeling, and being suspended in the aquamarine water surrounded by an abundance of life defined much of my trip. Whether it was a short boat ride to Honeymoon Island or Castaway Wall in the Mamanucas, or secret spots unlocked by the fun and generous staff at well-positioned and well-appointed Taveuni Island Resort, I couldn't get enough open water snorkels.

Oh, the things I could show you if only I'd had one during my adventures off Malolo Island, Taveuni, Qamea and Matangi. Live cowries as big as a man's fist. Pink and puffy cushion starfish straight out of an animated film. Pulsing Purple clams. Bronze Whaler, White Tip, and Leopard Sharks. Puffers, scorpion fish, clown fish families safe in their anemones. I could go on...

Yet, on land and in a boat my camera worked fine, and so I was able to capture some of the life living in the sea and on land. First, take a gander at these sea creatures, and in a few days, we'll move to land.

A pack of ubiquitous zebra fish off Malolo Island. Watch out--they bite!

Blue Chromis, spotted during a glassy morning on a just about perfect day trip to Qamea and surrounding islands with Sai at Taveuni Island Resort.

Hi Christine,
The fish are called blue chromis. See:
