SIX DEAD, THOUSANDS IN FIJI EVACUATION CENTERS

Weather office cancels severe flood warning
SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Jan. 25, 2012) – The floods in Fiji have cost the lives of six people while thousands still remain in various evacuation centres around the western division.
A landslide incident in Tukaraki Village, Yakete, Ba claimed the lives of two adults and two children yesterday while two men died in separate drowning cases on Sunday and Tuesday respectively. Despite making numerous attempts, the police search and rescue team could not retrieve the bodies of the deceased last night as they were buried under tonnes of soil. Over two thousand people remain in various evacuation centres around the western division as authorities are trying to reach to them with food ration and other supplies. [PIR editor’s note: Fijilive reported that with the lull in the rain officials “will visit the 64 evacuation centres which are harbouring 2562 people and provide them with some assistance.”] While rain has eased and flood waters have receded in many areas, most of the areas are still without power supply while some areas are also facing water cuts. Schools and towns remain closed in the western division as authorities are now busy clearing the roads and cleaning the amenities.
