The East West Center's Pacific Island Reports two deaths, bridges out, evacuations centers open in Fiji.
As Fijiguide blogger, Stu Johnson of Fijisurfco.com reported yesterday from Nadi, heavy rains over the past few days have caused heavy flooding and dangerous conditions in Fiji. Johnson said that helicopters were even deployed to take guests from some of the hotels to the airport.
Radio New Zealand reported that “Viti Levu, appears to be the worst affected with access roads cut off in the towns of Nadi, Ba and Rakiraki.” Fijilive reported on Monday that the Nadi River burst its banks and water was flowing into town. Prior to the river bursting its bank a report noted that “areas [already] underwater include[d] Nadi Market right up to the Catholic Church, Korociri Settlement, Nawatikuma Settlement, Saravi Settlement and Narewa Village.” The villages of Nasolo and Ba was also reportedly underwater.
The Fiji Times reported that evacuation centers are open in the Western Division and Radio New Zealand reported that at least 1,000 people have so far been evacuated. Heavy rain is predicted to continue over the next few days as a slow moving trough of low pressure moves over the island group. High tides have made the flooding worse. Meanwhile, Fijilive has reported that police have retrieved the body of a 35-year old man who was swept away by strong currents in the Caquru River, Northern Division, when “he tried to swim across the flooded river to free his pigs.”
Radio New Zealand reported that another farmer also drowned when he tried to rescue his livestock. With the heavy weather moving away from the Northern Division, The Fiji Times reported that “government teams were out early yesterday morning repairing damaged roads, bridges and clearing landslides.” “Department of National Roads spokesman Iliesa Sokia…said roads in Bulileka, Savusavu, and Taveuni in Vanua Levu that were underwater last night [Sunday] have started to clear up. Meanwhile, he said works on clearing the Batiri, Seaqaqa and Nabouwalu roads were underway . These roads were blocked due to a landslide that occurred overnight.”
