Staving off the hungry reptiles in Taveuni

According to the old testament, the Egyptians suffered through plagues of frogs, lice, flies, locusts and other wild animals.

Hanging out with the Bubba in Paradise

Well it only took an hour and a half to catch a wahoo, a half hour further of patrolling for sailfish (one jumped not too far off The Huntress) and then we headed home.   North of Taveuni, but still in Somosomo Strait, I could see Qamea and Matangi Islands to my left and Kioa and…

Getting to Makaira - via pearl shopping

Today, I leave Paradise Taveuni for Makaira Resort. Makaira is located a few hundred meters south of Matei Airport – so I’ll get a sense of the whole length of the island. Travelling with me are two Slovakian guests from the resort. I say my “Good Byes”, take a last look at the…

Korolevu Island

"How often is it that a beach has a website? Well, the beach that serves as the rest stop in Somosomo Strait does: http://www.fijifiji.com You see the link on a sign attached to a coconut tree - more on this later in the blog . . .

The website is interesting - it doesn't really say anything or impart much information about the beach or the yet…

Wow! Nuku Reef!

Paradise put on a great Lovo Feast last night. 'Twas real authentic: pig was put in the ground - roasted for a few hours along with vegetables - taken out and served. As we ate, people from the surrounding community started arriving with their families. The guitars, ukeleles, and voices soared above our conversation. The Milky Way shone in…

Land of

As promised, a slew of land creatures I spotted and documented on my recent travels on Taveuni and Malolo islands.

The spotted butterfly, glimpsed on the Lavena Coastal walk.

Spiders hung from webs and trees in Lavena.

Starry Nights

When gazing up at the night sky while on Taveuni, the stars are so bright you can see the gauzy Milky Way rolled out across our universe.

One planet, I believe it is Mars, hung low and bright in the sky like a diamond near Maui’s Fishhook (Scorpio).

If all the town lights…
