First visited Fiji in 1992 and have been every year since for periods varying from 2 to 4 weeks at a time. Have never stayed at a big resort style hotel, preferring smaller places where we can experience Fijian life closer to that of the locals. We have travelled extensively all over Fiji including to the Lau Group, and then every year finished our trip with a stay at Octopus in the Yasawas, where we have many friends and feel part of the family! I LOVE FIJI!

Tropical Cyclone Mick

Tropical Cyclone Mick has gone through the Yasawas today. Blue Lagoon Beach Resort on Nacula will have to delay their pre-Christmas opening until January to clear debris & sand and finish buildings. Trees have been brought down there and at Octopus Resort on Waya Island, which also has damage to buildings. No injuries reported.

New Resort in the Yasawas

There is a new resort which is just being developed on Nacula Island in the Yasawas, on the site of the old Nalova Bay Resort (which closed earlier this year). It will be opening for guests at the end of 2009, and will be a ‘sister’ resort to Octopus on Waya Island. I was lucky to be invited to spend a night there with the people (ex-Octopus managers) who are doing… Continue

Hi Marilyn...thanks so much for making the effort to become a member. I look forward to your commentary and feel free to contribute photos. Would love to see a series on Octopus and Lau. I don't have a lot from those areas and could feature them. Are you going to be in Fiji this xmas? I may be there...let me know what you think of the new, improved Fijiguide and how we can make it better...aloha Rob

Hi Marilyn,

This is great stuff. I will dump the existing material on Nalova Bay and mention your report. I'd like to go there and check it out this xmas. I'll to their website and perhaps email them to gather info. Keep up the good reporting!

Hi Marilyn,

Gorgeous stuff! Thanks for the contribution. Good to see places that a lot of people don't get to like Vanubalavu.

Bula, Tai Marilyn!

Thanks to you I have fallen in love with Fiji! I made three trips for a total of 40 days from July-Sept. 2011. I loved my 5 days at Blue Lagoon (dorm), (great food and activities), Yasawas were just like southern Guam; overnighted at Smugglers dorm; dove at Safari Lodge on Nanu-i-ra (off Raki Raki); explored Suva and loved the museum, Hibiscus Festival, the market (bought lots of kava for sevusevu); made 14 shark feeding dives (7 days) with Aqua Trek in Pacific Harbor: the founder of this sport, (tiger shark appeared only on my 10th dive); did a Fiji home stay two different nights with a family that I adored and previously only had 2 Kavalangi do so; and after a flight from Suva to Taveuni spent a delightful week at Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat (they have jungle tents but upgraded me to a bure) to dive the Rainbow Reef. I loved all the kava ceremonies and the Fijian people. I left Fiji on Continental's last flight to Guam: Sept. 25. I am dreaming of when I can return (rumor has it United/Continental will begin direct service Guam-Auckland).

I have SO many fantastic photos. I have put many on my Facebook wall and a few albums. How can I share them with you?

And a beautiful visit to Kioa, organized by Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat that has some employees from there, a 20-minute ride away.

Kioa is an island in Fiji, an outlier to Vanua Levu, one of Fiji's two main islands. Situated opposite Buca Bay, Kioa is a freehold by settlers from Tuvalu, who came between 1947 and 1983. Kioa is one of two islands in Fiji populated by South Sea Islanders, the other being Rabi, also in the Vanua Levu Group and home to a displaced Banaban community.

Wow, 11 days at Blue Lagoon and such a perfect place for grandchildren!

Friend me on Facebook (my account is just Dianne Strong) and this week I will post an album of Kioa. NO, they are proudly Polynesian!!!! I have wonderful video of their singing, etc. Their singing and dancing performance is their way of passing on their heritage to their children, rather than a "welcome tourists" event.
