Dr. Dianne Strong said… Bula, Tai Marilyn!
Thanks to you I have fallen in love with Fiji! I made three trips for a total of 40 days from July-Sept. 2011. I loved my 5 days at Blue Lagoon (dorm), (great food and activities), Yasawas were just like southern Guam; overnighted at Smugglers dorm; dove at Safari Lodge on Nanu-i-ra (off Raki Raki); explored Suva and loved the museum, Hibiscus Festival, the market (bought lots of kava for sevusevu); made 14 shark feeding dives (7 days) with Aqua Trek in Pacific Harbor: the founder of this sport, (tiger shark appeared only on my 10th dive); did a Fiji home stay two different nights with a family that I adored and previously only had 2 Kavalangi do so; and after a flight from Suva to Taveuni spent a delightful week at Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat (they have jungle tents but upgraded me to a bure) to dive the Rainbow Reef. I loved all the kava ceremonies and the Fijian people. I left Fiji on Continental's last flight to Guam: Sept. 25. I am dreaming of when I can return (rumor has it United/Continental will begin direct service Guam-Auckland).
I have SO many fantastic photos. I have put many on my Facebook wall and a few albums. How can I share them with you?
Vinadu riki!!!!
Dr. Dianne Strong said… And a beautiful visit to Kioa, organized by Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat that has some employees from there, a 20-minute ride away.
Kioa is an island in Fiji, an outlier to Vanua Levu, one of Fiji's two main islands. Situated opposite Buca Bay, Kioa is a freehold by settlers from Tuvalu, who came between 1947 and 1983. Kioa is one of two islands in Fiji populated by South Sea Islanders, the other being Rabi, also in the Vanua Levu Group and home to a displaced Banaban community.
Dr. Dianne Strong said… Wow, 11 days at Blue Lagoon and such a perfect place for grandchildren!
Friend me on Facebook (my account is just Dianne Strong) and this week I will post an album of Kioa. NO, they are proudly Polynesian!!!! I have wonderful video of their singing, etc. Their singing and dancing performance is their way of passing on their heritage to their children, rather than a "welcome tourists" event.
