You were asking about Makaira. Considering what your interests are no matter where you choose to stay, Taveuni is the place. Everything you like to do, this island offers in pure beauty. To get here just jump on our interisland carrier Pacific Sun for about an hours flight.
There is nowhere on Taveuni that would rent a boat, it is little risky with all the reef systems. However, we do have a boat and offer lengthy boat snorkel tours or you can spend days snorkeling for free at the beach below us with miles of reef. You can help me reef garden if you would like. We offer a Kayak to our guests so you can toodle around on that. I have one slot left during the time you are coming which is the Grander Suite from Aug 28th to September 9th if that works for you. If those dates work for you and you are still interested shoot me an e-mail at makaira@connect.com.fj and we can talk about it. But if you are diving I would suggest spending 10 days on Taveuni, so you get to do some good dives, hikes, snorkeling and there is no law against a little relaxing. Talk to you soon.

Taveuni is a beautiful Island but have not spent much time as not much happens there. Can't really give you much help on that side, but fishing and boat hire can always be arranged from a local or where you are staying.
My time in the Fiji Islands has been most often home in Savusavu, I dislike Nadi and Suva, and find visits to other smaller islands relaxing and rewarding but more than a day it also begins to bore me. Savusavu is small, laid back, and has all the distractions you could think of to keep you occupied. Am extremely happy in the Hidden Paradise or as it has began to be "Paradise Found!"
Sorry I couldn't have been more assistance, but know where-ever you stay you will fall in love with Fiji and her people. Farewell in your journeys, mataka, BulaBob

If your idea of a vacation is to "spend as much time as possible off the tourist track and connect with real people and real places" you should heed Bula Bob and Roberta's advice. Fiji's north is as good as it gets.
Both Taveuni and Savusavu are charming, out of the way places that will really offer the genuine travel experience that you desire. Value wise, you're going to have a tough time finding a better place than Makira. On Savusavu there are also some places to stay that offer good value. It's a gorgeous spot. Maybe Bula Bob has some ideas in that department since it's his territory.
