Fiji Diving

Fiji is considered one of the best dive spots in the world. Due to its isolation and lack of exposure to most of the human activities that cause reef destruction, every inch of the ocean floor is alive. Fiji's massive banks of soft corals are like underwater flower gardens waving gently with the currents. The variety of sea life you encounter on dives in the islands is truly awe-inspiring. My favorites were Natewa Bay and the area straight out from Taveuni Island Resort.

Would be interesting to hear your learning about the culture if there's time and you have the desire/energy to write (as opposed to just diving). I'm certain you're not going to be doing a lot of diving early on. I know they put you through kind of a bootcamp to learn language, customs, etc. I remember that from living in Fiji back in the 80s. Anything you could share with us would be appreciated. Vinaka

Comment by Dr. Dianne Strong on August 6, 2011 at 1:27pm: I dove off Nacula (Yasawas), near Rakiraki and Beqa Lagoon shark dives in July. I am returning to AquaTrek on August 20 for a week. I have been diving 42 years, used to instruct and am qualified in technical (trimix). Fiji with its famous soft corals had always been on my list. With the cessation of the Continental Guam-Nadi direct flight on Sept. 25th, I just had to go back for more diving!

Aqua Trek is a very good organization. I worked for them years ago. Glad to hear you've had good experiences with them. Be sure and check out our diving videos by Scott Putnam. I think he'd be interested in hearing about your experiences. I don't think he's familiar with the Rakiraki area nor Nacula.
