Hi
Coming to Fiji in January from US, on the way to New Zealand. We have 12 days. We want to stay away from the resort/touristy stuff as much as possible and also on a pretty tight budget--no more than $85/day for both of us for accommodations. We'd mostly like to go to an outer island like Tavenui or Vanua Balavu but are open to other options. Yasawas while beautiful seem very touristy. We'd also like to get to the other islands via boat instead of plane if possible. Would that work?
Ideally we'd like to stay at Fijian owned places. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Finally, any opinion on the homestay/village stay options like http://www.fijihomestays.com/homestays and http://www.fijibure.com/costs.htm?
Thank you so much
PS Anyone know about Nawanawa Estate? Does it still exist?

That's Bibi's--they have decent bures for not a lot of money. Go to the Taveuni section of the website and you'll find them. $85 per day is really a backpacker budget.
The Beachhouse is good on the coral coast too.
I don't know about the homestay options listed but I think that's a great idea. Kind of depends on what part of Fiji you want to go and the luck of the draw. Each village stay will be different in character.
Vanau Balavu is a beautiful island but it takes some work getting out there. Expensive to fly but there's always the boat if you have time-a lot of time.
