Out of anywhere I have traveled to in the world for surfing, Fiji hands down has some of the best waves and most epic scenery! The Fijian Islands pick up primarily swell from the South and the best months to travel here are generally from March through November. Although those are the most consistent months for swell, the South Pacific can receive southern hemisphere swells year around.
Here is are just a few of the fun surf breaks in Fiji. Most of these spots should only be surfed by intermediate to advanced surfers, but a few places can cater to beginners.
1. Swimming Pools - this is a mellow right reef break and is located just off the Island of Namotu. (Great for beginners to intermediates on long or short boards).
2. Namotu Left - this is the main reef break on the Island of Namotu and is a left hander. It is super fun from 3 - 6 ft and can get pretty hairy when it gets any bigger than 6 ft+. When this spot is smaller it can be fun on a longboard or SUP.
3. Wilkes Pass - this wave is a powerful barreling reef break across the channel from Namotu Island. Wilkes can hold big swells and should only be surfer by a more experienced person.
4. Cloudbreak - this is a world famous left reef break and has been featured in hundreds of surf videos/magazines. This wave can hold big surf, but is usually best in the 4 - 8 ft range.
5. Restaurants - this is the classic reeling left reef break right out front of Tavarua Island Resort. During smaller swells and at high tide Restaurants can be a fun reef break for any surfer wanting to have shred! At lower tide and on a bigger swell this wave is a race track and you better be ready to pump in the barrel to stay alive!

Permalink Reply by Robert F. Kay on December 17, 2011 at 7:16pm Hey Clarence, Thanks for the post. I'm in Fiji now and just left Matanivusa on the Coral Coast...there was a nice swell today... 3-4 feet right in front of the property at a couple of the local breaks (J's was one of them). I'm going to write this place up soon. If anybody wants to check out a great family surf resort (where spouses, kids, etc are welcomed) they must check out Matanivusi! Good vibes and wonderful food. Stay tuned.
