Beqa Island is the home of Fiji's Firewalkers, and periodically guests of Beqa Lagoon have the exclusive privilege of witnessing the sacred fire walking ceremony. Early in the day, young men from the neighboring village carry large branches to the resort and build an enormous bonfire underneath a pile of stones. When the fire is low and the stones are glowing red, the warriors reappear in ceremonial dress. The eldest begins a deep resonant chant, and slowly, one by one, the very young to the very old walk carefully across the scalding stones.
The bures at Beqa Lagoon Resort are ample and deluxe. Some are nestled around a large koi pond, in a lush, lagoon-like setting. Others are on the beach, with private verandas sporting plunge pools, spectacular ocean views and individual hammocks just beckoning for someone occupy. All bures offer air conditioning, impressive marble bathroom features, a king four-poster bed and a large sitting area with a double bed. For families, there are 2 bedroom suites (1000 sq.ft.) with one and a half baths.
